Kefalonia Highlights

I fell in love with Kefalonia the moment I landed on this little known and incredibly beautiful island. The narrow roads, the quiet lifestyle and the smiling faces. My husband and I spent a week here in a beautiful villa near the village of Spartia and, frankly, it just wasn’t long enough - the island is huge and has so much to offer so you're probably wondering were to start. Here are a few highlights from our trip to inspire your stay in Kefalonia…

1. Take in some of the local cuisine. We spent a week at stunning Korianna House and one balmy night we took a walk to the near-by village of Spartia and had dinner at the Cavo Liakas Restaurant. This sweet family owned restaurant delivered some of the best food I think I have ever had; we washed it down with local Greek wine and hung around late into the night to chat with the owner about life in Kefalonia and his family business. We wandered home under the stars feeling dozy and happy and very much in love with this new found spot!

2. Take a beach day. You are not short on wonderful beaches in Kefalonia, but by far our favourite beach was about a five minute drive from our house called Avithos Beach. We arrived pretty early and parked off on a sun lounger for the morning, dipping into the beautiful blue ocean to keep cool and then then wondered up to the local taverna for, yet more, incredible food. Avithos beach also has a bar right on the beach, so after dinner we would wonder down and park off here with a cocktail watching the world turn golden. Just writing about it gives me butterflies. Take. Me. Back!

3. Check out Asos. You would be gutted to miss the beautiful, seaside village of Asos - the drive in alone is spectacular, if not a little hair-raising being so close to the cliff! Once you’re there you can hike up to the old fort, or wander the quaint streets and shops. Park off at a taverna for lunch or a cold drink, and maybe a dip in the ocean. Asos is stunning - an instagrammers paradise!

4. Myrtos Beach. You just MUST go. We were honestly very concerned about seeing this beach, and thought we’d just have a look at it en-route to Asos, because we were worried it’d be overcrowded. But even though we were there in the peak of Summer Myrtos was quiet. And the blue colour you see in pictures is not made up - it really IS that blue. Make sure you take an umbrella and a lot of water and park off for the day.

5. Hire a boat. This made for our favourite day out! You can hire a small boat without a boat license and explore some near-by bays from Zola. We pottered around Fteri and Kamari beach and then parked off on our own private spot of beach near-by, floating on lilos, reading, napping and swimming. If you do anything whilst you’re in Kefalonia, let it be this!

GETTING THERE

EasyJet flies direct to Kefalonia from Gatwick Airport. Or you can fly into Athens and connect to Kefalonia on a local flight. Whilst here you are strongly advised to hire a car to explore the island which is very big and taxis and get expensive. Be aware that if you are island hopping through you will not be able to take a hire car on the ferries.
