Why your business needs a blog

At the beginning of this month I made a commitment to writing and sharing two blog posts/week. To start with I really thought I was going to struggle for content, and I was SO worried that whatever I would end up writing about would seem inauthentic or forced. But in truth it’s come very easily to me - sharing the tools I have that have boosted my business, that have helped me through tough times, that have grounded me, strengthened me and challenged me is like breathing; it’s what I do. I’m passionate about helping people live their best lives and having this space to share these tools each week is a dream come true for me.

Today I want to dive into “what is the point” of a blog anyway. A lot of people don’t understand how they can relate this back to their service, or how it will benefit them. But, here’s the thing, no matter what your business is, it needs a blog!

1. SEARCH ENGINES LOVE FRESH CONTENT

A blog is an inexpensive boost for your SEO! Google, Yahoo and Bing, even Pinterest LOVE seeing and sharing fresh content - old websites without much movement fall to the bottom of the ranks, but websites with constant updates and fresh content rise to the top!

2. SHARE AND CONNECT WITH NEW & EXISTING CLIENTS

A blog is a great way to share what you know and love; your existing clients will love your insights, and this is a great opportunity for you to draw in new clients too. Let’s say your business is event catering, and every month you share a new blog post detailing a favourite recipe - your current clients who already know and trust your service will love being able to bring your epic food to their family table and you’ll gain rapport with new clients who are impressed by your creative and delicious recipes. That’s simplifying it a lot, but you get the picture.

3. DRIVE MORE SALES

One of the primary reasons for blogging is to up increase your website visitors. Let’s say you sell an e-book on your website and that, on average, you sell one e-book to every 100 people who visited your website. If you triple your website traffic, you’ll sell three times as many books. Three e-books a month doesn’t seem like much but remember that websites don’t have a limit on the number of visitors, so when you invest time and energy into a blog to draw in new visitors you are investing in uncapped growth potential!

Getting Started

Starting a blog is mega easy! If you have a business, you probably have a website, and if it’s an CMS website like Squarespace or Wordpress you’ll have a blogging plug in that is ready and waiting for you. So you can just get started right away!

Write your own blogs, or hire a blogger

Blogging seems daunting and time-consuming, I know. We’re not all born writers, and if your business is something practical like carpentry then you’re not likely to be very interested in sitting down at your computer and writing 800 word blog posts that are engaging, well-written and SEO optimised. But the good news is that you don’t even need to write your own blog posts to reap the benefits! Services like Fiverr are packed with writers and content creators that LOVE this stuff. You can use Fiverr to outsource the jobs you don’t want to do, whilst you focus your time and energy on doing what you love and are good at. If your business is in the travel of wellness industries you can even hire ME on Fiverr!

Put your blog posts to work

Remember that blog posts are only as good as they eyes that fall on them. So share share share on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest. If you don’t have a Pinterest account set one up TODAY (a pin on Pinterest has a lifespan 1,400 X longer than a post on Facebook!) If Pinterest seems like too much work then sign up to Tailwind and set your pins on a loop - Tailwind will share your popular pins for you on a continuous loop, without you even lifting a finger, to make sure you get the most out of every post!

Once you are past the initial stumbling blocks, and you start to gain momentum on your learning curve you’ll find that blogging is easy, fun and you can reap benefits from your blog for years to come!
