The best skincare products for pregnancy

I have always been borderline obsessed with skincare. But not just any skincare; considering that the skin is the largest organ of the body and up to 70% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bodies I am painfully careful with my choices. When I became pregnant, this care only increased and I threw out what was remaining of my chemical-infused skincare products and made the move to all-natural, pregnancy safe skincare once and for all!

PREGNANCY SAFE SKINCARE

My go-to brand when I became bio-friendly all those year ago has been Green People, and when I became pregnant they did not disappoint! They have a whole section dedicated to pregnancy skincare, and another specialising in skincare for babies. I use their facial serum at night and moisturiser in the day. They also have a moisturiser with an SPF which I’d strongly recommend if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors.

PREGNANCY BELLY CREAM

The more I read about developing stretch marks during pregnancy the more I resigned myself to the fact that this may well be something entirely out of my hands! Needless to say I could literally feel my skin stretching and expanding and I knew that it needed extra love and support. I searched long and hard before I settled on Burt’s Bees Mama Bee Belly Butter which, I can confirm, is a DREAM! It is not as thick as a regular body butter; the perfect consistency in fact and totally odourless (there were some review that said it had a bad smell but I think they fixed this) and super super moisturising.

I’ve also heard great things about Neal’s Yard Mothers Balm, though whilst I personally can’t recommend it it may also be worth a try.

TREATING STRETCH MARKS POST-PREGNANCY

If stretch marks are something you’re worried about then, whilst I can’t speak from direct experience, I CAN say that Bio Oil is powerful stuff! I fell off a horse when I was teenager and hit my face against a rock which created a huge scar. I treated it every day with Bio Oil for months and it vanished to all but a dimple. I’ll be stocking up on Bio Oil post pregnancy for sure! You can buy Bio Oil at most pharmacies and super markets or order it off Amazon.

NATURAL DEODORANT

I would be amiss for not sharing a new form of all-natural underarm charm that I’ve come to love. Normal deodorants and anti-perspirants stop sweat by blocking our sweat glands with nasty chemicals (most of which make their way into the blood stream) but a natural deodorant works by creating odourless sweat. AND IT REALLY WORKS! I’m very obsessed with Pit Putty’s natural deodorant and since I started using it have all but forgotten what sweat even smells like! The clay like texture and application takes some getting used to, but I don’t even think about these days and I can’t imagine myself reverting back to “normal” deodorant ever again. Pit Putty is available on Amazon and direct.

PREGNANCY SAFE BATH OIL

Neal’s Yard are another firm favourite of mine, and whilst I haven’t yet tried it I have heard very good things about their Mothers Bath Oil. A nice warm bath is often just the thing that expectant mums need and I LOVE to light a couple of candles, put on some soothing music and have a good long soak in the tub!

SKIN CARE SUPPLEMENTS

I’m not big into supplements, but I know (because I have experience) the difference that some of these can make to your daly life. I started taking collagen a few years ago and it’s one supplement that I stand firmly behind. After the age of thirty we produce less and less collagen so our skin looses it’s elasticity, our hair begins to thin and our joints start to ache and creak. Sound familiar? Then a collagen supplement may be just the thing you need! I take around half the recommended dose of collagen daily; collagen production increases slightly during pregnancy but I’ve found I still need the extra support. My favourite collagen supplement is HunterGather Bovine collagen (important that you get this one and not Marine collagen!), but you can find more options for bovine and vegan collagen and more information on the importance of collagen here.
